Antivenene: A Hint to Collectors of Snake-Poison

To the Editor, " Indian Medical Gazette." Sir,?Iu reply to Dr. Ashmead's enquiry in the November number of the Indian Medical Gazette, I may relate the following : ? In July last, I took a pariah dog, chloroformed him and exposed a vein on the inside of the thigh When he had recovered from the chloroform a monocellate cobra was made to bite his fore paw. The snake was promptly killed and as much of his blood as I could collect injected, mixed with saline fluid, iuto the exposed vein of the dog. The dog died in half an hour. The experiment was very crude, there was no measurement of the venom or of the blood. The size of the snake's blood corpuscles might also have caused capillary thrombosis. I observe iu Dr. Elliott's paper he collects the venom by killing the snake and dissectiug out the glands. This seems to me very wasteful. Most snake-charmers here, and I dare say elsewhere in India, break off the fangs of the cobra and ophiophagus, and thus render them incapable of inflicting a mortal bite. Snakes so prepared can easily be obtained, and the operator can then, without killing the goose that lays the golden egg, collect venom ad libitum. It is well to
